A South African woman, Gosiame Thamara Sithole, has broken the Guinness World Records after giving birth to 10 children (decuplets) in one pregnancy.
The 37-year-old woman delivered the decuplets on Monday night, 7th June at a hospital in Pretoria. She is now a mother of 12, as she already has six-year-old twins.
The 10 children are seven boys and three girls. Shitole’s husband, Teboho Tsotesti, who spoke to Pretoria News said that the babies were delivered through a Caesarean section.
He said the doctors had initially scanned for eight children but found two more after the surgery was done.
“It’s seven boys and three girls. She was seven months and seven days’ pregnant. I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much,” Tsotetsi said.
The development comes a month after Halima Cisse from Mali gave birth to nine babies in Morocco. Cisse gave birth to five girls and four boys.
According to the Sentinel, the record holder of the most children delivered at a single birth to survive was an American, Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to eight children in 2009. Her octuplets were conceived through in vitro fertilisation.
