A video of a National Youth Service (NYS) officer polishing Sports, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba received widespread criticism.

The officer was spotted hunkering down to clean the Minister’s dusty shoes.

The act attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans, with many opining that the act was demeaning and colonial in nature.

However, today Namwamba hosted the officer named Dickson Loyerer at his office and appreciated him.

The CS clarified that Loyerer wiped the voluntarily, contrary to reports that he was forced.

The gesture happened after Namwamba and a group of NYS officers finishing planting trees, leaving his shoes dirty.

When he met Loyerer, Namwamba served him tea as they shared light moments.

Apart from that, he offered him a decent job at his office as a sign of gratitude. The officer will be among the CS’ personal staff.

Ken Kaburu believes that if netizens did not roar, nothing would have happened.

“It is the people’s online uproar that made this happen. Otherwise, it would have been a normal day for the NYS man. Let’s appreciate all noisemakers.”

Gitonga Gatheka wrote: “There is something known as honor, the gesture eventually paid off.”

Yvonne Kawira said: “Humility always pays. Always. I love how small acts of kindness change one’s life instantly and forever. His life will never be the same again.”

Denno Kauo commented: “How anyone would let another human being bend over to clean their shoes while they stand there grinning still baffles me unless she is a shoe shiner at work.”

Calvin Jodisi chimed: “He (the officer) should thank God for social media. He is now honored.”
