The Amani National Congress (ANC) party has lashed out at Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua over his remarks that the Kenya Kwanza coalition will front a running mate from the Mt Kenya region. flagbearer.
The MP had said that Deputy President William Ruto is the undisputed Kenya Kwanza Alliance flagbearer and his running mate will be picked from Mt Kenya.
“We have our National Delegates Conference (NDC) on the 15th of March to unveil our presidential candidate William Samoei Ruto, other things will follow,” Gachagua told Citizen TV on Monday’s Day Break show.
“As far as I am concerned, the running mate will come from the mountain at the appropriate time.”
Responding to Gachagua’s remarks, ANC Secretary-General Simon Gikuru issued a statement on Monday saying that Gachagua did not have any authority whatsoever to speak on behalf of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“Hon. Rigathi Gachagua has no authority to speak for Kenya Kwanza on the matter hence his sentiments are premature, untimely and unwarranted,” read part of the ANC’s statement.
The party further said that Kenya Kwanza is yet to decide on its presidential candidate as well as running mate.
“Kenya Kwanza Coalition has not decided on its presidential and running mate candidates. This will happen and be unveiled at an appropriate time by our principals Musalia Mudavadi, Dr. William Ruto and Moses Wetangula,” ANC said.
The development came barely a day after the two Principals-Ruto and Mudavadi left the country for US and UK visits.
