Arsenal defeated English Premier League champions Liverpool to take the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, 29th August.
The normal 90 minutes of action ended in a 1-1 draw, with Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having netted for Arsenal in the 12th minute. Japanese star Takumi Minamino equalised for Liverpool in the 73rd minute.
After the draw, the match was settled on penalties, with the Gunners securing a 5-4 victory over the Reds.
Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Minamino and substitute Curtis Jones all scored for Liverpool in the shootout, but fellow substitute Rhian Brewster lost his shot.
Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares, and David Luiz all scored for the Gunners before captain Aubameyang swabbed his shot past Alisson to seal the win.
This was the fourth Community Shield meeting between Liverpool and Arsenal, with the Reds winning at Wembley in 1979 and 1989, and the Gunners lifting the trophy in Cardiff in 2002.
The FA Community Shield is an annual match played between the winners of the previous season’s English Premier League champions and FA Cup winners.
The win for the Gunners builds confidence in Mikel Arteta’s men who had a poor run in the previous campaign, finishing in eighth place.
The 2020/21 campaign will officially kick off on12th September. Arsenal will take on Fulham while Liverpool will clash with Leeds United in their opening matches of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.
