English Premier League side Aston Villa have signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal FC for a reported fee of £20 million.
The 28-year-old Argentinean international has inked a four-year deal that will keep him at Villa Park until 2024.
Martinez joined Arsenal in 2010, coming from Independiente. He joined the first team in the 2012/13 campaign under manager Arsene Wenger.
In his 11-year stay at the Emirates, he has made 39 first-team appearances, spending loan spells with six clubs – Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves, Getafe and Reading.
Last season, Martinez impressed when deputising for the injured Bernd Leno and helped the Gunners to win the FA Cup and Community Shield.
Martinez will now join fellow new signings Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash.
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said that as a club, they were excited about Martinez’s arrival.
“We are really pleased with the signing of our new goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez. We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side, ” Smith was quoted as saying by the club’s official website.
“We moved for Emi when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can, therefore, be a key player for our club for the long term.”
The Lions will kick off their 2020/21 campaign with a visit to Sheffield on Monday, 21st September.
