American business tycoon and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage.
In a joint statement seen by Litkenya.com, the couple said they believe they can no longer grow together as a couple into the next phase of their lives.
The billionaire couple, who have three children, asked for space and privacy as they begin their new chapter.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.
“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” read the statement issued by the couple.
The couple met at Microsoft where Melinda was working as a product manager. They got married in Hawaii in 1994.
According to time.com, the Gateses will be the second high-profile Seattle-area billionaire couple to end their marriage in recent years.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos finalised their divorce in 2019. MacKenzie Scott has since remarried and now focuses on her own philanthropy. She received a four per cent stake in Amazon, worth more than $36 billion.
