Lady Justice Martha Koome has been recommended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to become the next Chief Justice.

In a statement this evening, 27th April, Prof Olive Mugenda, who chaired the interviews for the Chief Justice post, said all the commissioners unanimously settled on Koome.

Her name has been forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointment.

“The Judicial Service Commission has finalised the process of evaluation of various candidates interviewed for the position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya. The JSC has run an open, transparent, and competitive recruitment process that has witnessed the participation of the public and key stakeholders.

“After lengthy deliberations and careful considerations of the performance of various candidates, the JSC has unanimously recommended the appointment of Honourable Lady Justice Martha Koome,” she said.

When the President unveils her as the next Head of the Judiciary, she will take over from David Maraga, who retired in January.

Also, she will make history as the first female Chief Justice of Kenya.
