Chief Justice David Maraga has disowned a woman who caused drama earlier in the day in Nairobi, claiming that he had a child with her, but has neglected his parental responsibility.
Through his legal team, Maraga told off the woman, saying that the scenes witnessed at Milimani Law Courts had been stage-managed.
Lawyer Danstan Omari claimed that the “deep state” (apparent reference to the Executive) could be using the woman to taint Maraga’s name, just a few months before his retirement.
The advocate questioned the authenticity of the documents, particularly the birth certificate presented by the woman, claiming that it was forged.
“There is no registrar of births by the name Shamwati in the whole country. Neither has there been an officer called N.P. Otieno in the Nairobi office, which means the certificate was generated,” Omari said.
He added that the president of the Supreme Court is under huge pressure from senior government operatives, who want him to resign before his tenure expires.
Omari further noted that the public humiliation was meant to create an impression in the minds of Kenyans that CJ Maraga has failed in his job.
“They began by erecting a poster on Thika Road, purporting that the CJ was having love affairs with judges. That did not push the chief justice to retire or resign. A petition was filed to push for a similar action, which is still pending in court.”
The woman, who identified herself as Mary Onyancha, said that she was seeking court orders compelling the CJ to pay Ksh160,000 in child support every month.
Two weeks ago, Maraga was forced to clear his name after “unknown people” circulated a video claiming that he and a fellow judge had a romantic relationship between 2017 and 2018.
In his defence, the CJ accused the government of using all means possible to push him out of the Judiciary.
