A cooperative society has been established to promote and safeguard the interests of avocado farmers.

Murang’a Avocado Cooperative was launched by Governor Mwangi Wairia who said the booming avocado farming must be safeguarded by all means.

Murang’a County is currently leading in Hass avocado production for export.

Speaking in Thika, Wairia warned that brokers would soon flock to the avocado market to try and reap more than the farmers.

“We know brokers are on the way and we must protect our farmers. This is why we have established Murang’a Avocado Cooperative,” he added.

The governor pointed out that the cooperative would focus on giving farmers maximum returns.

“This is the best way to cater for the interests of the farmers. It will also stop greedy brokers,” he said.

Avocado Billions

Last year alone, Murang’a avocado producers reaped billions of money from their efforts.

The county chief said that more than Ksh7 billion went into the farmers’ pockets.

“This year, we know farmers will get more than the Ksh7 billion they received in 2019. This is no doubt a profitable business,” he said.
