Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary-general Francis Atwoli has asked workers whose rights are being flouted by foreign employers to report them to the authorities.
Speaking to the media on Friday, 14th February in Mombasa, Atwoli warned foreign investors against harassing Kenyan employees.
Reacting to a recent video in which a Chinese chef was captured caning a Kenyan employee in a restaurant in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, for allegedly reporting to work late, Atwoli said foreign employers must respect Kenyan workers.
“Kenyans are very hardworking people, and we have a huge economy, which, if it is properly managed, can grow and create employment for more people.”
Atwoli commended Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for ordering the deportation of the Chinese man involved, and three of his compatriots, who were also arrested after the incident.
He appealed to Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to deport all the foreigners working in Kenya illegally.
“I’m appealing to the IG to round up all the illegal foreign workers and have them deported,” he said.
