A Nairobi court has fined a former MP Ksh1.3 million for soliciting and receiving a Ksh100,000 bribe.

Former Kasarani MP John Njoroge Chege was found guilty on Friday, 29th May.

He will serve one year in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

In mitigation, Chege said he was remorseful and urged the court to be lenient to him as he had already suffered greatly. He did not elaborate.

However, Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi said the prosecution had proved the offence.

The former legislator was in 2013 arraigned for allegedly soliciting a bribe.

According to the charge sheet, while at the Continental House parking yard in Nairobi, Chege solicited Ksh100,000 from Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, as an inducement to facilitate the payment of Ksh3.3 million for a completed Baba Dogo Secondary School tuition block.
