Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) detectives have arrested two suspects who have been engaging in multiple cases of online fraud where many have fallen victim in the hope of being enlisted for stipends to cope with Covid-19.

The two identified as Brian Osoro Nyariki and Duke Sabungi Ongwes, both aged 22, were early today, Sunday, 31st May, arrested in Kisii.

According to the DCI, the two opened four fake Facebook accounts they used to lure vulnerable members of the public to register with at least Ksh599 for consideration in a false issuance of Ksh30,000 stipend to cope with the pandemic.

Once the money was received, the duo, who use multiple pseudo accounts to post on the page as having benefited from the aid, block their victims as they use several sim cards to receive the cash.

Several victims had been defrauded, prompting a manhunt for the two, in whose possession the detectives recovered 53 Airtel and three Telecom sim-cards.

The DCI said that charges would be preferred against the two, including publication of false information contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act and Obtaining Money by False pretence contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.
