Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) has nominated politician Johnstone Muthama‘s estranged wife, Agnes Kavindu, as the party’s candidate for the Machakos senatorial by-election.
Muthama, who was Machakos Senator between 2013 and 2017, is the current chairman of United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The UDA outfit has been linked to Deputy President William Ruto, and has even been tipped as the DP’s official party, which he could use to seek the presidency in 2022.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka presented the party’s nomination certificate to Kavindu, expressing confidence that she would carry the day.
“We present this certificate of nomination for Senator, Machakos County, to Agnes Kavindu Muthama as the duly nominated candidate to represent the Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya,” he said.
The mini-poll is slated for March 18.
Muthama and Kavindu have been reading from different scripts, politically, in recent years.
During the 2017 General Election, Muthama did not defend his seat, but supported Wiper and by extension the opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa).
On the other hand, Kavindu backed the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and was even nominated by the Jubilee Party to contest the Machakos gubernatorial seat. She garnered 92, 823 votes.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that Muthama is likely to fly the UDA flag in the mini poll.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) selected former Water Minister John Mutua Katuku as its aspirant in the contest.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Senator Boniface Mutinda Kabaka.
