DP Ruto Welcome to Kisumu, But County ODM Official Sets Condition

The campaigns for the 2022 General Election are gearing up with the politicians, including Deputy President William Ruto, already setting the mood at gatherings in various parts of the country.

The Deputy President is now planning a rally in Kisumu with a delegation from Kibra, Nairobi, Kisumu, and Siaya. Last year’s Kibra parliamentary election loser on an ANC ticket, Eliud Owalo, is expected to lead the delegation next week.

The DP’s visit to Kisumu, ODM officials have said, will depend on conditions set by them.

Speaking in Kisumu Town on Friday, 19th September, party branch chairman Ayiecho Olweny said that the DP could visit the region whenever he wishes, as the residents of Kisumu and ODM, are not afraid of him.

However, he has been warned against insulting dormer Prime Minister and ODM leader Raila Odinga when he visits.

Prof Olweny said in a statement: “This is Raila’s stronghold and will remain to be so no matter how many visits the DP makes to the region. If he brings goodies, take them but that does not mean that everyone who attends that function is his supporter.”

Owalo, a former Raila aide, recently decamped from the ANC and announced he had joined Ruto’s 2022 presidential campaign.

He said: “We will take Ruto everywhere in Nyanza and I can assure you he will get votes when elections are held.”

The March 9, 2018 “handshake” between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila, has left Ruto apparently sidelined from leadership that he helped to build. He has since become the greatest opponent, challenging an attempt by the two to lead a campaign to change the Constitution.

During a recent interview with a TV station, Ruto said: “I don’t know what is being amended. To the best of my knowledge, this whole push is by leaders, and not by the people. The people are at this moment concerned about jobs and their livelihoods.”
