Kenya’s Emerging Stars have been bundled out of the 2021 Cecafa U-23 tournament in Ethiopia after a 4-2 defeat to Burundi on post-match penalties. The match was played at the Bahir Dar Stadium on Tuesday, 27th July.
The teams proceeded to the shootout after their tightly contested encounter ended in a barren draw.
Hakizima Issa, Ndikumana Asman, Hakizimana Adolphe, and Nduwimana Franck were all on target for Burundi in the penalties, with Bernard Ochieng and Frank Odhiambo bagging the two goals for Kenya.
Kenya had reached the semifinals after beating Djibouti 3-0 in their opening match followed by a 2-0 victory over South Sudan in their second match.
Burundi, on the other hand, beat Eritrea 3-0 in their first match and secured a 1-0 win against hosts Ethiopia.
Burundi will now clash with Tanzania in the final scheduled for Friday, 30th July. Tanzania reached the finals after edging out South Sudan, 1-0 in their semifinal match.
Meanwhile, Kenya will face South Sudan in the third/fourth place playoff match on Friday.
