English Premier League side Everton has sacked manager Rafa Benitez after just six months in charge.

The 61-year-old Spaniard joined the club in June, replacing Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, who left after 12 months in charge to join Real Madrid.

“Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager. Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the club with immediate effect,” the club announced in a statement on Sunday, 16th January.

“An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.”

His sacking comes after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Norwich City on Saturday, 15th January.

The Toffees have won only one match in the league since September – a slight 2-1 victory over Arsenal in December.

Everton are in the 16th spot with 19 points after 19 games this season, just six points off the relegation places.
