Veteran Kenya African National Union (Kanu) politician Zablon Owigo Olang’ is dead.
Olang’, 81, died on Sunday, 10th January, at St Carmilla’s Hospital in Nyatike, Migori County. The cause of death has yet to be revealed.
Kanu chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi condoled with the family of the seasoned politician, whom he described him as a “selfless leader”.
Migori Woman Representative Pamella Odhiambo also eulogised the former MP as a great leader.
“He was one of the veteran politicians who changed the face of democracy at a time when freedom of expression was curtailed under a single-party system,” Odhiambo told the Nation.
“He went door to door looking for votes as campaigns had not become as sophisticated as they are today,” she recalled.
Olang’ was elected Ndhiwa MP under Kanu and served between 1979 and 1984 before the constituency was split to create the new Nyatike constituency.
He also served as an Assistant Minister for Constitutional and Justice Affairs between 1979 and 1983.
In 2003, former President Mwai Kibaki appointed Olang’ as chairman of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA).
