I know you must have heard stories of people, who have literally gone through hell on earth for many years. Their testimonies are usually painful, but most of the time have a sweet ending.
But have you heard of someone, who has totally depended on friends and doctors for a long time, 16 years to be precise?
That’s the story of Ann Kariuki, a gospel musician.
Ann had a beautiful and promising life until 2005. Her music career was blossoming and she had recorded some greats songs that are still ruling the airwaves today.
One afternoon, she went to a restaurant and was served with fish, which was her favourite meal.
On that dreadful day, a piece of bone got struck in her throat.
“At first I didn’t know it was something serious. I approached the waiter, who asked me to drink some yoghurt and all would be well. I did that and went home,” she said during an interview with Mt Kenya TV.
A few days later, she lost her voice and now it was time to seek medical attention.
The doctors recommended a delicate surgery that turned out very tragic. The surgeon ended up destroying another part of her throat, although the piece of bone was removed.
She had to go through another procedure to correct the surgeon’s mistake. That was in 2006.
The same year even before she recovered, the singer was involved in a serious road accident that left her paralysed.
The Gikombe hitmaker has sought treatment in all major hospitals in Kenya and India, but no doctor has been able to diagnose the problem.
“I’ve been on treatment ever since. I’m taken to hospital every week by a friend because, as you can see, I’m on my bed all day in this rental house. I depend on friends and well-wishers to get money for medicine and rent,” she said.
Also Ann has not slept for more than a decade.
“This condition deprives one of all sleep. Even when I’m given some strong medication to force a rest, my body does not cooperate.”
Her faith in God is strong and she believes this all will pass and she will get back to her feet.
“This is something I will overcome. I know the testimony that God is preparing for me will shake the world. I know He is good and I will never doubt that,” Ann says with a smile.
