Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has picked Education CEC James Kinyua Mutugi as her running mate for the 9th August gubernatorial race.

Speaking during the unveiling on Tuesday evening, 24th May Waiguru hailed Kinyua as a diligent and hardworking man.

“I want to inform you that I have settled on Mr James Kinyua Mutugi as my running mate. He is hardworking and will make a competent deputy,” Waiguru stated.

Waiguru said that the appointment will help strike gender and regional balance in the leadership positions.

“Last time, I choose my Deputy from Mwea East, this time, I have chosen from Mwea West,” she said.

Mr. Kinyua thanked Governor Waiguru for picking him and promised to support her should they clinch the Gubernatorial seat in the August election.

“I want to say that I feel honoured and thankful for choosing me among so many candidates. I promise you that I will be royal to help you do deliver to the people of Kirinyaga,” he said.

Mutugi replaces Mwea East’s Peter Ndambiri, who is deputising Jubilee Party’s candidate Charles Kibiru.

Mutugi previously served as Wamumu ward MCA from 2013 to 2017, before being appointed county education CEC in 2017.

Governor Waiguru, who is defending her seat on a UDA ticket, will face Kibiru of the Jubilee party and Kirinyaga women rep Purity Ngirici who is vying as an independent candidate.

Ngirici recently unveiled former commissioner Eliud Wanjao as her deputy.
