Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has directed that food donations and distribution be done through the county governments, county commissioners and the Covid-19 Fund Board only.
This comes just a day after a donation made by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga caused chaos in Nairobi’s Kibera slums, with deaths being reported.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and his wife Ida Odinga on Thursday afternoon sent food donations worth Ksh15 million to Kibra residents.
This was meant to help the Kibra residents during these hard economic times occasioned by the corionavirus pandemic.
A statement sent to newsrooms by the ODM leader’s communication director, Dennis Onyango, had indicated that the former premier would make the donations through the government, to help alleviate the challenges faced by the community.
The aid was mobilised by the Odinga family from own savings, corporates and individual friends.
They includeed food, sanitisers, soap, oil and water all valued at Ksh15 million.
Among the donors that partnered with the Odingas are Kenya Pipeline Ltd, Bidco, Tononoka Steels Ltd, KAPU Africa, Kapa Oil and business mogul Jimi Wanjigi.
To comply with the need for social distancing, the supplies were delivered to the offics of Deputy County Commissioner in Kibra.
However, while receiving the donations, the residents scrambled to have a share, resulting in chaos with people falling one another, causing the deaths of two women.
