Health workers in Machakos County have vowed to down tools on Monday, 20th April, if their March salaries will not have paid by then.
Addressing reporters in Machakos Town, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union regional Secretary-General Charles Okumu said the workers could not stand it anymore.
“We have been in contact with the county government for the past two weeks. They have been blaming the National Treasury for not disbursing money to them. They have up to Monday to pay us, failing which we will be forced to stay away,” he said.
Okumu said that other counties had paid their health workers and they did not understand why not Machakos.
“We work without pay, and without enough protective gear. We have reached a point of no return. We don’t have any money for food or even transport to our work stations.”
The union official announced that all the medical practitioners, including doctors, clinical officers, nurses, and laboratory officers, would go on strike.
Governor Mutua recently promised to pay special allowances to the health workers in appreciation of their efforts in fighting the coronavirus disease, risking their own lives.
