‘Hit Squad’ Skipper Okoth, Ongare and Ajowi Cruise Into Tokyo Olympics Boxing Qualifier Semis

National boxing team ‘Hit Squad’ skipper Nick Okoth, and compatriots Christine Ongare and Elly Ajowi cruised into the semifinals of the Africa Boxing 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.

Okoth outpunched Angolan Manuel Pedro Gomes to book a ticket to the semifinals.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Christine Ongare, 26, also qualified for the women’s flyweight semis after she dispatched Congolese Zalia Munga. Ongare will face Morocco’s Rabab Chedder in the semis on Wednesday evening.

“I dreamed this. I know in amateur boxing, you don’t train for the person you are going to meet; you train for all and any kinds of opponents. My focus is not here. I am just passing through as I want to make history,” Ongare said.

African Games bronze medallist Elly Ajowi outpunched Congolese Maroy Sadiki on Tuesday in a split decision to reach the semi-finals of the heavyweight contest.

Ajowi, 37, will now face African Games silver medallist Youness Balla from Morocco in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
