Kisumu residents are counting their losses after homes and businesses were submerged following the heavy rains experienced on Wednesday night, 25th December, as other Kenyans were enjoying their Christmas celebrations.
Some of the people were trapped in flood waters, according to a Kenya Red Cross post on its Twitter handle indicating that houses in Nyamasare and Manyatta villages have been marooned by floods.
A Red Cross team from the Kisumu branch was reported to be evacuating the victims to safer grounds. Property of unknown value has been destroyed by the floods.
The latest forecast by the Meteorological Department indicates that the heavy rainfall will continue in most parts of the country until January.
There have been unusually heavy rains across the country this season caused by changes in the temperatures of the western Indian Ocean
Earlier, the Kenya Meteorological Department had cautioned about heavy rains in some counties, including Narok, Kajiado, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Siaya.
