The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has clarified that that some hotels, lodges and resorts will be allowed to serve alcohol to their customers.

Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala said in a statement that only establishments with accommodation will be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages.

Balala said that such services should be offered strictly to people in their private rooms.

“I will now clarify that following guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health, only lodges, hotels and resorts offering accommodation are allowed to serve alcoholic drinks to their checked-in guests strictly on room-service basis,” he stated.

The CS reiterated that the ban on alcohol remains in force and anyone defying the presidential order will have their licences revoked for good.

“Guidelines banning the sale of alcoholic drinks in bars and restaurants is very clear and it must be adhered to. Any violators of this directive will be deregistered permanently,” the cabinet secretary said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday, 27th July, banned the sale of alcohol across the country.

The President noted that alcohol lovers were socialising without following the recommended physical distancing rule, which was introduced to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There shall be no sale of alcoholic beverages in eateries and restaurants across the territory of the Republic of Kenya effective midnight today till further notice,” the Head of State directed.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe remarked that the move was not only good in curbing the spread of coronavirus, but also necessary for some tipplers to sober up and reflect on their lives.

Bar and night club owners have faulted the government for targeting them unfairly in the fight against Covid-19.
