It’s Emphatic Imran Victory in Kibra Poll as ODM Blocks Entry to Leader Raila’s ‘Bedroom’

Bernard Imran Okoth is the Kibra MP-elect, after a bruising campaign and a keenly watched polling on 7th November.  The IEBC, on Friday, November 8, announced the final results. Imran Okoth garnered 24,636 votes, beating Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga, who managed 11,230 votes, a difference of a whopping 13,406 votes. In what had been billed as a fight to enter the “bedroom” (stronghold) of former long-serving MP Raila Odinga, the ODM leader, Mariga’s defeat is a setback for his major backer, Deputy President William Ruto, who is believed to have bulldozed his candidature.
ANC’s Eliud Owalo came a distant third, garnering only 5,725 votes, while Khamisi Butichi Ramadhani of Ford-Kenya, got a miserly 260 ballots.
The turnout was 35 percent, being 41,984 votes out of the registered 118658 voters.
Mariga called Okoth to concede defeat, on sensing early that it was a tough and high mountain to climb. He congratulated him and invited him to lunch. He also said that he was ready to support and work with Imran to serve Kibra constituents.
“After the election, we should now strengthen our friendship. I will offer you my maximum support,” Mariga said.
Okoth acknowledged the congratulatory message in a tweet, saying, “I’m humbled to have received a call from @MarigaOfficial. That’s the spirit of politics. I promise to move forward with every interested party for the good of our people. God bless Kibra!”
The by-election has been widely seen as a dress rehearsal by Deputy President William Ruto for the 2022 General Election.
