Nairobi-based billionaire Jimi Wanjigi has officially launched his presidential bid today, 9th July.
The event was held in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area and attended by some elders from the Luo community.
The business magnate had earlier announced that he hopes to use the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to pursue his presidential ambition. At today’s launch, he wore an ODM sash.
Wanjigi said he is not afraid of facing ODM party leader Raila Odinga for the ticket.
He exuded confidence in beating the former Prime Minister in the nominations, stating that as an ODM life member, he cannot be ignored.
Others that intend to pursue the presidency using the Orange party ticket are deputy party leaders and governors Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega).
Meanwhile, Wanjigi was spotted with Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria after unveiling his State House bid. Details of their meeting remained scanty.
It is the first time the tycoon is expressing his interest in running for a political seat, but behind the scenes, he was a key pillar for powerful politicians in the 2013 and 2017 General Elections.
Apart from being an influential financier, he also helped in the formation of the Jubilee coalition in 2013 and the National Super Alliance (Nasa) in 2017.
Nasa comprised Raila, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi, Ford-Kenya boss Moses Wetang’ula, and Isaac Ruto’s Chama cha Mapinduzi, while the Jubilee coalition had President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, as its main leaders.
