The Kenya national basketball team edged out South Sudan 74-68 on the last day of the FIBA Afrobasketball pre-qualifiers at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium in Nairobi.
The Morans are now through to FIBA Afrobasket 2021 qualifiers to be held in November for the first time. The team finished unbeaten in the tournament played in a round-robin format.
The Kenyans took the lead in the first quarter 25-19. While the South Sudanese struck back with a lead of 30-29 to the break. Kenya stretched their lead to 38-32. Before moving further ahead to 44-45, the South Sudanese got their way back with a late pout three, but Kenya moved into the fourth, leading 52-46.
Burundi beat Eritrea 101-54, while Tanzania lost 101-84 to Somalia. Burundi, Eritrea, Tanzania and Somalia were the other teams in the five-day competition.
The Morans will join continental giants Senegal, Angola and Mozambique in Pool B of the qualifiers, with the top three all guaranteed places in the championships set for 2021.
