Kithure Kindiki Surrenders, as 54 Senators Vote to Remove Him as Deputy Speaker

Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki has been dethroned as the Senate Deputy Speaker.

Fifty-four senators voted for his ouster against seven who defended Kindiki, who is said to be an ally of Deputy President William Ruto.

In the dramatic session, a disappointed Kindiki said he had forgiven his accusers.

The Tharaka Nithi Senator claimed that someone outside the Jubilee Party had pushed for his removal from the position.

He went on to claim that all the allegations levelled against him were baseless.

Kindiki has been dewhipped after failing to show up for a Parliamentary Group meeting summoned by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi, two weeks ago.

Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata, who gave notice of removal, said that Kindiki had undermined the President.

Meanwhile, even as senators overwhelmingly voted to kick him out, a majority of them admitted that the Tharaka Nithi senator is a competent man.

Many said Kindiki had served the Senate with impartiality.

However, they also noted that party discipline and loyalty to the party leader were key.

Narok Senator Ledama OleKina said that even as they sympathised with Kindiki, his Jubilee Party had resolved to oust him, a position they could not dispute.
