Defending English Premier League champions Liverpool fought hard to beat newly promoted Leeds United 4-3 in an entertaining game on Saturday, 12th September, at Anfield Stadium.
The Reds took the lead in the fourth minute through Mohamed Salah’s penalty, which was equalised by Jack Harrison’s 12th minute strike.
Virgil van Dijk put Liverpool ahead again in the 20th minute before Patrick Bamford levelled the score for Leeds in the 30th minute. Three minutes later, Salah added the third goal to give the hosts a 3-2 lead before the break.
In the second half, Leeds equalised for the third time through Mateusz Klich in the 66th minute before Salah’s second penalty in the 88th minute sealed the win for the Reds.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, man of the match Salah admitted that it was so tough at Anfield without the fans.
“It’s a good start for us,” said Salah. “A tough team, they press high as well, so the intensity was really high. We had a good game. We shouldn’t have conceded three. They scored three goals against us; that’s huge. I’m happy about the result and we have to keep on improving and try not to concede as many goals.”
With the win, Juergen Klopp’s charges are now in second place, while Marcelo Bielsa’s men are in the 18th spot in the league standings.
In another match, Crystal Palace beat Southampton 1-0, with a goal from Wilfried Zaha in the 13th minute.
After this tough debut, Leeds United will host Fulham on Saturday, 19th September, before visiting Sheffield United on Sunday, 27th September.
Meanwhile, the defending champions will next clash with Chelsea on Sunday, 20th September, before meeting FA Cup winners Arsenal on Monday, 28th September.
