Maina Njenga Mungiki-Like Sect Supporting Uhuru Sparks Fears in Mt Kenya

Reformed Mungiki leader Maina Njenga is causing jitters in the Mt Kenya region after launching another movement.

His new sect, which some people have liked to Mungiki, is already sweeping the Mountain in crazy dimensions.

The politician has recruited over 5,000 young men into his sect, with each member undergoing several rituals before becoming a member.

A recruit must take an oath, which they have labelled “dawa”.

Another prerequisite is swimming through a river.

Interestingly, these rituals are being carried out in broad daylight.

In recently weeks, Maina has been presiding over what he is describing as prayer meetings.

During these meetings, the youth sing Kikuyu nationalism songs.

What has ignited confusing is the question of whether the group is political or cultural.

Some politicians, including former Nyeri gubernatorial candidate Dr Thuo Mathenge – also a moneyed businessman – have been associating themselves with the sect.

The group has declared loyalty to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga.

Some Kenyans believe the group is being financed by deep-pocketed politicians to counter the influence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and defend Uhuru, combatively.

Maina has attended several Azimio’s anti-government rallies with his supporters.

There are fears that the group could launch targeted attacks if not

The big question is: “What is the gamep plan?” Loop pool 1
