Malkia Strikers Eyeing 2020 Olympic Games Spot in Tokyo to Tackle Nigeria

National women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers play their final match in Cameroon today against Nigeria, as they inch closer to qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

They have already swept aside Egypt, Botswana and Cameroon. Kenya beat Egypt 3-1, Botswana 3-0 and Cameroon 3-2.

Malkia Strikers are on top of the charts in the African qualifiers, with three straight wins after edging their closest rivals Egypt in the opening match, Botswana in the second and hosts Cameroon in the third.

They have maintained their perfect run as they seek to end their 15-year jinx. Kenya last participated in the Olympic Games in Greece in 2004.

Coach Paul Bitok’s side on Tuesday evening won 3-2 against Cameroon, the team which beat Kenya in the final of the African Nations’ Cup last year. This year, things have turned out differently, as Malkia Strikers dimmed Cameroon in their quest for the Olympics spot.

Nigeria have only won once against Botswana 3-1, losing to both Cameroon and Egypt by three straight sets.

A win for Malkia Strikers today against Nigeria will be enough to book a slot in this year’s Olympic Games  in Tokyo.

The match will be played at 6pm East African time.
