Matungu Mini-Poll: Ex-CS Rashid Echesa on the Run After Slapping IEBC Official

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has reportedly gone into hiding hours after slapping an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official.

Echesa was filmed unleashing the slap on the presiding officer at Bulonga Primary School in Matungu constituency.

The politician had demanded to know why the clerk had blocked a United Democratic Alliance’s (UDA) agent from accessing the polling station.

The IEBC officer is said to have barred the agent from the polling station because he didn’t have a face mask.

IEBC had clearly stated that anyone without a mask should not be allowed into a voting area.

Upset by the clerk’s response, Echesa slapped him.

Police started looking for him, but he could not be found.

They are currently surrounding his home in Kakamega County.

The Matungu by-election attracted 15 contestants.

However, ODM’s David Were, ANC’s Peter Nabulindo and UDA’s Alex Lanya were considered the front-runners.

Political pundits have described the race as a dress rehearsal for the coming BBI referendum.
