The Media Council of Kenya has praised Homeboyz Radio for sacking three presenters, Shaffie Weru, Neville Muasya, and Joseph Munoru aka DJ Joe Mfalme, over gender-insensitive remarks.

The trio were accused of making derogatory comments against women during the morning show on Homeboyz Radio.

In a statement issued in Nairobi on Sunday, 28th March, CEO David Omwoyo said this was a sign of “commitment to upholding ethical standards in their programming.

“The council takes note of the action taken by the management of the radio station against the individuals and commends them for taking responsibility as a sign of commitment to uphold ethical standards in their programming. Consequently, the council will be keen on following up on such matters to enforce compliance as per the Media Council Act 2013.”

Following the presenters’ remarks, East African Breweries Limited (EABL) on Saturday, 27th March, withdrew advertising with Radio Africa Group.

EABL asked Radio Africa Group to ensure a continuous training programme for presenters to be sensitised on gender matters and commit itself to airing content that will address negative gender narratives.

“Beginning Thursday, March 26, EABL paused all forms of advertising on all programmes related with these presenters. As a precondition to revert to our advertising partnership, we have asked RAG to conduct due diligence in the selection of presenters and embed a robust consequence management plan on those that do not abide by the code of conduct, ” read part of EABL statement.
