Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her Taita-Taveta counterpart, Andrew Mwadime, are the only independents elected in the 47 counties.

As she unveiled her Cabinet today, Kawira made some independent decisions, including giving her husband, Murega Baicu, some duties.

Kawira appointed the county’s First Gentleman as the Patron of Meru Youth Service and the Ambassador of Meru Hustlers.

However, the county chief insisted that her husband will not be paid as he is just a volunteer.

Murega was the number one supporter of his wife during the election campaigns, and was always with her.

The musician entertained his wife’s supporters on the campaign trail.

“My husband’s guitar is magical and amazing. He always carried it and played it to the people in every rally and meeting I held.
People loved to watch and listen to the music he played praising me and the people of Meru. I can say 50 per cent of my win was contributed by the instrument,” Kawira said.

Murega, who is the founder of Baite TV, which broadcasts in Meru, made numerous political ads in support of his wife. The efforts paid off after she beat two strong men, Kiraitu Murungi and Mithika Linturi, to capture the seat.

She garnered 209,148 votes, followed closely by Linturi who managed 183,858 votes while Kiraitu came third with 110,814.

Since her election, Murega has been walking closely beside his wife and appears to be a very happy man.

County First Ladies and First Gentlemen enjoy privileges such as funds to support community projects and comprehensive medical covers
