Harambee Stars striker Michael Ogada Olunga has been named the Meiji Yasuda J.League Konami Monthly Most Valuable Player (MVP) for August.

The award recognises the most outstanding player in the Japanese top-flight.

The former Gor Mahia striker secured the award after scoring six goals for his Kashiwa Reysol side in August.

Taking to his Twitter account Olunga could not hide his joy being the first Kenyan ever to win the trophy.

“It’s humbling to be named the Meiji Yasuda Konami August 2020 MVP,” Olunga wrote.

“Firstly, to thank God for His unending grace. Secondly, my teammates, coaching staff, subordinate staff, and fans for their support. Thanks, and to many more. Inshallah. God above all!”

Olunga joined Reysol Kashiwa in 2018 from Chinese Super League side Guizhou Zhicheng.

In his first debut, he scored seven goals for Kashiwa in a 13–1 victory over Kyoto Sanga. He finished that season with 27 league goals as his side won the J2 season and was promoted to the first division.

This season, Olunga has scored 15 goals in 15 J-League games, and is the top scorer so far.

Olunga will be in action again on Sunday, 13th when his side clashes against 15th placed Sagan Tosu. Currently, Kashiwa is ranked 5th with 26 points after 15 league matches.
