Fast food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on Monday 3rd January announced a shortage of potato fries.

In a statement on social media, the company said that the shortage is due to the increased demand for orders during the festive season.

“Fam it was truly a Furaha December. 🥳 Mlikula sherehe with your KFC faves. Ya’ll loved our chips a little too much, and we’ve run out,” KFC tweeted.

The firm apologised to its esteemed customers saying its working to resolve the issue.

“Sorry! Our team is working hard to resolve the issue. In the meantime here are some SWAP options for combo meals if you are craving our Kuku.”

As a result, KFC opted to offer substitutes such as coleslaw, snack buns, cobs, chicken and ugali to its customers.

Reports indicate that KFC imports its potatoes from Egypt, the Netherlands, South Africa among other countries.

The news attracted mixed reactions among Kenyans who questioned why the fast food franchise had snubbed local farmers to import their potatoes from abroad.

Here are some of the reactions from Kenyans.

Ahmed Maalim Adow: “It’s only in kenya where you will learn of investor crimes allowed by the govt from the same investors inefficiency 😪! When the govt accepted KFC’s investment they knew our farmers won’t benefit but they allowed & never educated the farmers or even informed them. Ugali it is!!”

Shoba Gatimu: “When KFC was coming into the Kenyan Fast food industry, a pertinent issue arose 2011-2012. They said they would be importing potatoes from Egypt and Netherlands because ours are substandard. This would be a great time to come up with safeguarding policy but hatupendi logic.”

Wainaina Shake’s: “Resist! KFC is running out of stock because they import their potatoes from outside the country, why they can’t buy from our local farmers??”

Guevara: “So whenever we buy chips from KFC Kenya, we are actually supporting South African farmers? Blame your legislators, it’s a policy that should have been put in place a long time ago to curb this menace.”

Hababa Mombasa: “So KFC potatoes are peeled and cut in Egypt! How do they arrive In Kenya not spoilt? Obviously with lots of chemicals 🙄 Na munakaa ati hudungi chanjo ya corona coz of side effect na huku munakula peeled waru all the way from Egypt.”
