Kibwezi MP Jessica Mbalu has dismissed the perception that the International Women’s Day celebrations are all about some women angling for political leadership.
During an interview with Musyi FM, the MP explained that the special women’s day was only meant to create awareness on the need to empower women to become self-reliant and able to run manage their own affairs.
The fight for women’s rights was meant to protect them from exploitation and enable them to cater for families’ needs.
“We have been intimidated for too long time but now must take our rightful place in the society. We are claiming our positions in decision making in our families and also in the running of the nation, with many laws enacted to protect women.”
This year’s International Women’s Day was celebrated on Sunday, 8th March.
During the day, Makueni County County Gender and Social Services Chief Officer Diana Muli gave a special treat to the inmates at the local women’s prison.
The convicts were advised to use the skills and knowledge gained from self-empowerment forums in prison when they return to their families.
