The media fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran journalist Gatonye Gathura.

The scribe went missing on October 26 before his body was retrieved in Kihoto Estate in Naivasha, Nakuru County on the same day.

According to police, his remains were booked at the Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary.

But since he did not have any documents, his kept at the morgue as an “unknown male adult”.

The Registrar of Persons used fingerprints technology to reveal his identity.

Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander Samuel Waweru said preliminary investigations were pointing to murder.

He said detectives suspect that he was killed elsewhere and his body dumped along the Naivasha-MaiMahiu road.

A copper wire was found on his neck, making the police believe he was strangled to death.

Gatonye worked with the Nation and the Standard before he started practicing as an independent journalist.

He founded rocketscience.co.ke where he has been publishing his work. His last article was released on October 19.

The seasoned journalist specialized in health and science reporting.
