A Nairobi Member of the County Assembly was on Friday, 31st July, 2020 teargassed while being interviewed live on TV.
Maringo Hamza MCA Mark Ng’ang’a had to cut his interview short, and run for his life.
On Tuesday, 28th July, 2020, chaos rocked City Hall, as a section of MCAs sought to serve Speaker Beatrice Elachi with an impeachment notice. This forced the police to intervene, which saw some of the members brutalised.
Ng’ang’a was speaking on the incidents that led to the chaos at City Hall before the police disrupted his interview.
He was criticising Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Mohammed Badi.
The MCA accused Matiang’i of involving himself in political matters, contrary to what is expected of him as a public servant. He said the Interior CS should be focused on making police reforms to ensure that they do their work effectively.
Teargas canisters were lobbed at him before he could finish his statement.
