The Nation Media Group has appointed seasoned journalist Bakari Machumu as the new Managing Director of its Tanzanian subsidiary, Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL). He will report to Group CEO Stephen Gitagama.
His appointment takes effect from 1st May 2021.
Before his appointment, Machumu was the acting Managing Director and Executive Editor at MCL headquarters on Mandela Expressway in Dar es Salaam. He has been with the company since 2004, when he joined MCL and became the first business editor of The Citizen newspaper. He was promoted to managing editor after two years.
He was appointed the Executive Editor of MCL in 2012. Machumu has been Instrumental in spearheading MCL’s digital transformation agenda, making it the first newsroom to embrace convergence in Tanzania in April 2017.
As the Managing Director, Mwachumu, who has over 20 years of experience in senior management, will be responsible for the overall leadership of MCL.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture General from Sokoine University of Agriculture (1998), and a Master of Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI, 2018). He is currently pursuing an Executive Master’s in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI), from the Aga Khan University, Graduate School of Media and Communication, Nairobi Campus.
Recently, NMG also made senior appointments in its Editorial Department where Daniel Kalinaki of NMG Uganda was named Africa Editor and GM Editorial. Joseph Warungu was appointed as the Broadcasting Managing Editor, and Jackson Munyao became the EastAfrican Managing Editor.
Michael Omondi was named as the Business Daily Editor, Peter Ngare, the Taifas Managing Editor, and the Editorial Administration Manager. Leonard Guchu was appointed the Saturday Nation Editor while Patrick Langat became the Regional News Editor, Eldoret.
