Deputy President William Ruto‘s first attempt at city politics left him with egg on his face.
That was in 2019 during the Kibra parliamentary by-election. The Deputy President mounted a well-oiled campaign for the Jubilee candidate, soccer star McDonald Mariga, who lost to ODM’s Imran Okoth.
Admittedly, voter bribery was rampant. President Uhuru Kenyatta is on record as saying: “The people of Kibra did not want the campaigns to end because they have eaten well from these politicians.” He did not mention names, but your guess is as good as mine.
Fast forward to December 2020, through his foot soldiers in the Senate, the DP unsuccessfully tried to block the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko.
But the decision by President Kenyatta and ODM boss Raila Odinga’s allies to kick out Sonko is turning out to be a blessing in disguise for the DP.
A by-election will be held some time in February or March next year and all indications are that the DP is flexing his muscles ready to give his boss and the former Prime Minister a good run for their money.
And this would be a plus a man who recently masterminded the whitewashing of the ‘Handshake’ candidate in Msambweni parliamentary by-election.
Former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru is grooming herself to be the ‘Hustler’ candidate for the upcoming by-election in Nairobi.
“I have been campaigning for the seat. All I need to do is to just accelerate it, I’m the candidate the people have been waiting for and I’m ready to serve Nairobians,” she said.
In 2013, Wanjiru wanted to become the first Nairobi Governor, but ODM shortchanged her at the last minute and handed the party ticket to Evans Kidero, who won the seat.
A Female Governor
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, a Tangatanga diehard, is among the group rooting for Wanjiru’s candidature.
“Nairobi is READY for a competent, qualified, DECENT Woman Governor,” he said.
Should the DP pick the founder of Jesus Is Alive Ministries, his campaign packaging will likely target the unpopular clauses in the BBI report and the Msambweni by-election’s win to counter opponents. Money will also be a key ingredient.
The Jubilee Party has attracted more than five candidates who want its ticket, but it will be a tight race between BBI secretariat co-chair Dennis Waweru and former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth.
Both of them enjoy the support of the President and ODM Raila having been key promoters of the BBI.
Waweru has said he is the most qualified person to replace Sonko.
It is expected that the ODM will team up with the President’s allies to capture the seat.
