The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) board has appointed Dr Peter Kamunyo as the new Chief Executive Officer.
His appointment takes effect on April 14. He takes over from Nichodemus Odongo, who has been serving in an acting capacity.
Odongo was appointed following the exit of Geofrey Mwangi, whose reign was marred by graft allegations.
Dr Kamunyo is a health care executive with 21 years experience, raging from clinical practice and healthcare management, and medical insurance, to healthcare supply chain and strategic purchasing and pharmaceutical industry.
Prior to his appointment, Dr Kamunyo was the Chief Executive Officer of MedSource Group Limited. He has also previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline, as the country commercial director, Vaccines and Public Institutions Head. He was the General Manager for Aon Insurance Brokers, and also led the Africa Healthcare Practice Group.
Dr Kamunyo sits on the boards of the East African Healthcare Federation and the Kenya Healthcare Federation.
He holds a Master of Science degree in Public Health from the University of London, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV management, both from the University of Nairobi.
