Two doctors and three other people have been arrested by police on suspicion of illegally procuring abortions at a clinic in Pangani estate in Nairobi.
Police officers acting on a tip-off raided Prestige Health Point Medical Centre on Murang’a Road and picked up the suspects.
The five were identified as Dr Mwaura Karumi, Dr John Marore, Christopher Mwangi, Judith Anyanzwa and Erick Mwenda.
Police seized medical records, assorted drugs and medical appliances.
According to a statement issued by the DCI in Nairobi: “Also recovered at the scene was a blue bin with decomposing foetuses numbering about 10.”
The DCI tweeted: “The two doctors, together with Christopher Mwangi, Erick Mwenda and Judith Anyanzwa, were arrested on suspicion that they were conducting an abortion in the said facility, where 10 decomposing foetuses and appliances suspected to have been used were also recovered.”
Abortion is illegal, unless, in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is a need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of the mother is in danger.
