Police Spokesman Charles Owino has announced his interest in running for the Siaya gubernatorial seat in the 2022 General Election.
Speaking in a radio interview on Tuesday, 16th February, Owino said that he would retire from the police service in December and gun for Siaya’s top seat.
Two weeks ago, addressing ODM delegates in Siaya County, Owino said he was the best candidate for the job.
“I never wanted to declare my political interest here today but because my father has reminded me of who I am, you are aware that next year people will declare interest in various positions and as a person who has worked in government, I will have clocked 50, which allows me to resign,” said Owino.
He reminded those eyeing for the same position, including Siaya Senator James Orengo, to prepare themselves for a tough fight.
“I know that the seat will attract many contestants, including Senator Orengo, and I hope he and other contenders are much prepared for the race or else they will be disappointed at the ballot box,” he added.
Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga will leave office after August 2022, having served for two five-year terms as provided for in the Constitution.
Former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, who lost the seat to Rasanga in the 2017 General Election, has also declared interest in the seat.
