Proposed 2020/2021 Calendar For Phased Reopening of Schools

The Ministry of Education is working tirelessly to ensure that schools reopen soon.

The preparations mainly focus on the safety of the learners when they return to school.

While the Covid-19 numbers are gradually decreasing, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha is certain that schools will reopen before the close of the year.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Education Committee, Prof Magoha said that schools should reopen this year as the Covid-19 situation could go on into next year.

When the green light is given, schools that have prepared will will be allowed to reopen.

But as the learners have stayed home for the past eight months, the school calendar has been disrupted.

The proposed calendar for 2020/2021 is as follows:

On 26th October, Class Eight and Form Four candidates will report to school with a holiday break from 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021.

Grades 1 to 4, Classes 5 to 7 and Forms 1 to 3 will report on 4th of January 2021 to repeat the 2020 academic year.

The 2020 KCPE exam will be held as from March 30th 2021 to 1st April 2021.

Primary school pupils are expected to attend classes on alternate days while secondary boarding students have classes in the morning and afternoon shifts.

Day secondary schools to attend classes on day shifts.

Form Four students will go to school from Monday to Friday, Forms 1 and 2 on Tuesday and Thursday, and Form Three on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Even though the school calendar for 2020/2021 has been proposed, changes to the calendar could be made.
