Real Madrid Sink Barcelona in Spanish ‘El Clasico’ Clash

Real Madrid secured a 3-1 victory over bitter rivals Barcelona in La Liga ‘El Clasico’ clash at Camp Nou on Saturday, 24th October.

The first half ended in a 1-1 draw, with Federico Valverde scoring for Madrid in the 5th minute before Ansu Fati levelled for the hosts in the 8th minute.

In the second half, defender Sergio Ramos made it 2-1 through a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and Luka Modric sealed the win with the third goal in stoppage time.

With the result, Real Madrid move to the top of the La Liga table with 13 points from six games, six points above Barcelona who are in 12th place.

Speaking during a press conference after the match, Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said the win would give them confidence after a frustrating week.

On Wednesday, 21st October, Real Madrid started their Uefa Champions League campaign with a 2-3 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I’m very happy for the players. This is a team victory. I think we played a perfect match. Winning here is not easy but we prepared for the match well. We had to think like a team, get our confidence back and l think this was a good match,” said Zidane.

“These are three points, nothing more. After the criticism we received in these past days, we had to stay calm and united. Play when we had to play, and play like we did today.”

Ronald Koeman’s men have now lost two of their opening matches in five La Liga fixtures this season.
