Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and four other suspects in a Ksh40 billion gun tender fraud case have secured a major victory, with the High Court slashing their cash bails.
The suspects, who had initially been ordered to cough up Ksh1 million each, will now pay Ksh200,000.
Chrispin Oduor, Kennedy Oyoo, Daniel Otieno and Clifford Okoth are accused of conspiring with Echesa to defraud some foreigners by posing as government officials negotiating a military equipment procurement deal.
The accused had appealed for a review of their bail terms, indicating that they were unable to raise the Ksh1 million bail that had been set.
””Two of the respondents have only managed to secure Ksh300,000 and Ksh200,000. They are not in a position to raise more,” lawyer Cliff Ombeta told the court.
One of the suspects, Otieno, had also appealed for leniency, saying that he suffers from diabetes.
