Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim has asked Kenya Power to restore power supply to several areas in Mbooni East. including Kikima trading centre, which have suffered blackouts for several months.
He said that 13 transformers had malfunctioned, causing the power outages in those areas.
“Kenya Power should replace all the faulty transformers and ensure a steady power supply to Kikima,” he appealed.
Maalim accused some of the power utility’s technical staff of negligence of duty, which, he said, compromised the security of the residents due to the power failures.
Last month, the people of Kamuwongo area in Mwingi region of Kitui County said they had suffered a power blackout for more than three months, amid unfulfilled promises by Kenya Power to restore supply.
Kathukini trading centre also in Kitui has not had electricity for a month, hampering all the small businesses, including barbershops, beauty salons and welding shops.
