Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has resigned as chairman of the Senate Ad hoc Committee on Covid-19.

Sakaja has this morning presented himself at Kilimani Police Station.

He went to the station accompanied by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and his lawyer, John Khaminwa.

He was released on a Ksh10,000 bond.

His lawyers said that he would be charged tomorrow (Tuesday, 21st July, 2020) but the police had not disclosed the charges he would face.

Sakaja also publicly apologised to Kenyans for violating the Covid-19 protocols.

“I take responsibility for having flouted the Covid-19 rules. I was out of my home past 9pm…It is regrettable but all of us make mistakes. Therefore, I have resigned from the Ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19, which I have been chairing,” he said.

Police found him at Ladies Lounge on Dennis Prit Road on Saturday morning, while drinking in the company of 10 other people. He was later released on a free bond and was to go back to the station and record his statement before being arraigned today.

Police had started looking for him after he failed to record the statement. He had been given up to Sunday evening, but he did not show up.

“He has not recorded the statement. I am sure he will be recording anytime. We don’t know his whereabouts. He said he would present himself to the police. We hope he will keep his word,” Ndolo was quoted by the media as saying.

He was arrested with three other people and according to a police report, he became unruly after being ordered to leave the nightclub. He allegedly incited the others to stay put.

After being taken into custody, Sakaja is said to have threatened to have the officers at the station transferred within 24 hours.

He also declined to be released on free bond. After reports of his arrest went viral, he took to social media denying having been arrested, and declared that he would never be arrested.
