The bodies of two Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination candidates have this afternoon been recovered from a dam and transferred to Kenyatta University Funeral Home in Nairobi.
The boys drowned at Theta Dam yesterday afternoon during a school trip. They were pupils at Comejuu Premier Academy in Githunguri, Kiambu County.
Head teacher David Paul Kang’ethe said that about 60 Standard Eight and Grade 6 learners had gone to Kinale Forest for an excursion when the tragedy occurred.
The tragic outing happened shortly after the deceased and their counterparts had completed rehearsals for the KCPE examination on Friday.
The final exams in primary school begin on Monday next week.
Details about how the accident occurred had not been received by the time of filing this report.
A member of one of the bereaved families wrote to education activist Ndungu Nyoro last evening, claiming that the school first withheld information regarding the tragedy from parents until later in the evening.
“At 8:30 pm, the mum was called to go to the school since there was an emergency but did not disclose any more information. When we were almost approaching the school, we were told to go to a hospital where they shared the information. Our candidate was not sick but dead,” she wrote on Facebook.
